CHRISTINA RUF

MAPLESS

We are far away from what we call reality
These one thousand sounds are your compass
Use it as a guide to find the variance

Close to the wooden body, with bows in hand. Close to its sounds, vibrations and substance. Placing objects on or between the strings. Collecting the pure, squeaky and creaky ones.

Extract, cut, remove. Place the sounds in a different context, on a surface that the fingers touch. By touching the waveform and playing the particles, a decomposition and interweaving of sounds occur. New emerging sculptures portray both the exposure of their rawness and their electronically enhanced beauty.

An approximation in their simultaneous alienation.

Christina Ruf is an experimental cellist and composer from Austria. Her music is a result of the use of alternative playing techniques, effect pedals and electric cello constantly attempting to move further and further away from the cliches associated with her instrument, and the role that it has taken on in modern contemporary music.
